The Clean Water Network (CWN) is a coalition of more than 1,200 public interest organizations across the country, representing more than 5 million people, working together to strengthen and implement federal clean water and wetlands policy. It is the largest national coalition working to defend and strengthen the federal Clean Water Act.
Hot Off the Press... Major Regional CWN Mississippi River Basin October Summit On the Dead Zone Big Success! CWN joined forces with the Sierra Club, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and the Gulf Restoration Network to organize a landmark regional summit on Mississippi River Basin environmental issues in New Orleans. The Summit focused on developing strategies to address the enormous environmental challenges we face from the expanding Dead Zone in the Gulf. The event attracted more than 100 attendees! Through a generous grant from the McKnight Foundation, CWN provided travel funding for members to attend. The event was held at the New Orleans Marriott located on 555 Canal Street. The Summit started with a trip to the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans, visiting a destroyed bayou/wetlands area and the river bank. Tour goers also viewed the numerous new construction taking place throughout this area that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Beach Act Reauthorization Bill (S. 787) and Clean Water Restoration Act approved by the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee! The Beach Act Reauthorization Bill (S. 878), now called the Clean Coastal Environment and Public Health Act, and a compromise Clean Water Restoration Act (S. 787), were both marked up and approved by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee in June! Additionally the Sewage Right-to-Know Act (S. 937), the Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Network Continuing Authorization Act (S. 470), and the Contaminated Sediment Remediation Reauthorization Act (S. 933-also known as the Great Lakes Legacy Act), were also passed by the EPW Committee and will be a que to be considered on the Senate Floor. These are great steps forward, but there is still much work to be done to ensure these important bills get through the whole Senate! It's Clean Water Network DUES TIME! We need every CWN Member to ACTIVELY SUPPORT CWN this year! With the economy on shaky ground and foundations not as robust as they once were, these are trying times for everyone in the environmental movement. This year we are asking you all to make an important pledge to renew your membership dues. Your support will enable the Clean Water Network to continue its important work on Capitol Hill and across the country. Our goal is to get a majority of members to pay their dues by June 30th, a critical time in our fiscal year.
